Your Website Should Be Your Best Salesperson

Walk into a well-run company and you can tell who is allowed to talk to a customer. There is a person who knows the offer, can answer the obvious objections, and knows when to ask for the work. Most websites are not that person. They are a brochure left on a table in an empty lobby.

The job of a business website is not to impress other designers. It is to do the first sales conversation, at 11:40 p.m., when no one is answering the phone. That means the visitor should know, in the first screen, who you help, what you do, and why it is reasonable to inquire.

Three things separate a site that produces work from a site that merely occupies a domain. First, specificity. “Quality service since 1998” tells a buyer nothing. “Roof replacement for coastal homes in Flagler County” does. Second, proof. Real projects, real numbers, real faces. Third, a next step that is easy to take. If the only action is a buried contact page, you are asking a warm lead to go hunting.

We see this constantly: companies with excellent operations and a website that apologizes for them. The fix is not more animation. It is a clearer story, better structure, and pages designed around the questions a serious buyer actually asks.

If you are considering a redesign, start with this test. Hand your phone to someone who does not work in your industry. Give them ten seconds. Then ask what you do, who it is for, and how they would get in touch. If they cannot answer, the site is not selling. It is decorating.
